If I understand your question correctly, you're saying that 3 numbers x, y & z add up to 88; and that x-5 = y+5 = 5z.

So, we know that y+5 = 5z, or z= .2(y+5)
Substituting in: x +y +z = 88 becomes x + y + .2(y+5) = 88
Simplifying, we get: x + 1.2y + 1 = 88, or x + 1.2y = 87
Next, we know that x-5 = y+5, so (subtracting 5 from each side), y = x-10
Substituting again, we get x + 1.2(x-10) = 87
Simplifying, we get: x + 1.2x - 12 = 87
2.2x = 99
x = 45
y = x-10 = 35
z = .2(x-5) = 8

Check: x+y+z = 45+35+8 = 88!

So, x-z = 45-8 = 37.

answer is e) 37

Let the three numbers be a, b and c

Given a + b + c = 88
Also, a + 5 = b - 5 = 5c
Now by rewriting we get a = b - 10 and b = 5 (C+ 1)

since b = 5 (c+1) and the numbers are natural numbers
we get that b is a multiple of 5

now, by trial and error, when b = 35, a will be 25 and c will be 6
but not possible since total is not 88

similarly when b = 45, a will be 35 and c wil be 8... here, the total is 88... thus it satisfies..

the difference is 37. ... (45 - 8)

Learn to answer what is asked and not trying to solve all the problems associated with the question.... This is a multiple choice so you probably get only 2 minutes to solve it anyway. Here is how I would do it.

Obviously the first is the largest because you decrease it by five and increase the others and it's equal to the others. If z is the smallest, you need x - z

Given
x-5 = y+5 = z * 5
and x+y+z = 88 find x - z this is the question

first,sum is 88(the numbers are x,y,z)

x+y+z =88

then write the other equation

x-5 = y+5 = 5z

take the first equation

x-5 = y+5
x = y+10 (this is yr 1st equation)

take the second part

y+5 = 5z (yr second equ)

z= (y+5)/5

put them all in together in the first equation

(y+10) + y+(y+5)/5 =88

11y= 385
y=35

so, x= y+10 , x= 45

z= (y+5)/5 =8

difference of largest and the smallest is;

45-8= 37

x + y + z = 88
(x - 5) = (y +5) = 5z

x is the largest number
z is the smallest number

(x - 5) = 5z..................(y +5) = 5z
x = 5z + 5....................y = 5z - 5

5z + 5 + y + z = 88... y + 6z = 83... 11z = 88... z = 8
x + (5(8) - 5) + 8 = 88... x + 35 + 8 = 88... x = 45

x - z = 45 - 8 = 37

so your answer is e) 37...
