This is a hypothetical experiment involving two independent variables. College students seeking counseling at a campus counseling center were administered the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) as a normal intake procedure. Scores range from zero to 63. Single, female undergraduate students, having scores between ten and eighteen on the BDI (moderate depression) and having ongoing relationship problems, were recruited for this experiment. Twenty-four female students volunteered to participate. Six students were randomly assigned to each of four conditions:

Professional Counselor without Bibliotherapy:
Paraprofessional Counselor without Bibliotherapy:
Professional Counselor with Bibliotherapy:
Paraprofessional Counselor with Bibliotherapy:

Bibliotherapy entailed the reading of a recent book titled: “Student-friendly Relationship.” This book was written as a self-help manual for college students having relationship distress. It discussed “warning signs” indicating that a romantic relationship was likely to disrupt academic achievement. The book also included chapters on improving communication in romantic relationships and coping with the break up of a relationship. At the midpoint of six weeks of counseling, students in the bibliotherapy group took a short multiple choice quiz on the book to assure that they read the book. All twelve counselors involved in the study had read the book and were instructed to discuss the book in the bibliotherapy groups but not to discuss the book in the groups without bibliotherapy.

Six professional counselors had all achieved professional licensure and had from 2 to 10 years of counseling experience. Each counselor was assigned to two clients, one in the Bibliotherapy group and one in the group without bibliotherapy.

Six paraprofessional counselors were female undergraduate psychology majors in their junior and senior year. These paraprofessional counselors had attended a two week workshop on peer counseling that included active listening skills and fundamental strategies for crisis intervention. Each counselor was assigned to two clients, one in the bibliotherapy group and one in the group without bibliotherapy.

5 men and a monkey picked nuts all day, scooped the nuts into a single pile and went to bed.

During the night 1 man got up, divided the nuts into 5 even piles but there was 1 nut left over which he gave to the monkey. He kept 1 pile for himself and scooped the remaining 4 piles back together and returned to bed. Later on a second man got up, divided the nuts into 5 even piles and again there was 1 nut left over which he gave to the monkey. He also kept one pile for himself, scooped the remaining 4 piles together and went back to bed.

Similarly during the night each of the remaining men (3, 4 and 5) got up one by one and divided the nuts into 5 even piles, each time there was 1 nut left over which he gave to the monkey, kept 1 pile for himself and scooped the remaining 4 piles together and went back to bed.

In the morning they all got up, divided the nuts into 5 even piles, once again there was 1 nut left over which they gave to the monkey, took 1 pile each and went home.

What would you say is the integral of F(x) from a point A to A? (The same point). Before immediately saying zero, think about the definition of integral. Is 1/infinity the same as 0?
