it's for my maths coursework...there are symbols for pi and theta but is there one for sigma?

Yep. Open up Microsoft Word, and then put the cursor where you want the symbol inserted, Go to "insert" on the menu bar and click "symbol". It should be in there.

You can try Insert>Symbol.. on Microsoft Word, or use shortcuts on Macs, but you can also use Microsoft Equation Editor 3.0 for Word also if you can't find sigma. Go to Insert>Object>Microsoft Equation Editor. Browse that little window thingy that pops up for the symbol and stick it into your document. Voila!

It depends on what program you are using for your homework, but if you are using Word, you can click on Insert up at the top, then Symbol, then check the lists there to see if the program includes the symbol. I found it on mine in WP Greek Helve which I think is the entire Greek alphabet.

Yes. It looks like a capital E, but the left side is a little caved in. The actual sign looks like this: Σ

In Unicode the character is U+03A3. I think the key shortcut is Alt+0931... ‡ aww... :(

You should get a mac, then it is simple "alt-w" ∑. I love smart technology.
