Which is the better magazine deal, 1 yr for $20 or 2 yrs for 30 assuming 3.5% inflation, can invest @5%?. And why is your answer a better deal. No answer wanted without rationale

Which is the better deal to take when subscribing to a magazine? One year at $15 or 2 years at $29.50 assuming a 3.5% rate of inflation and that I can invest money not spent at 5%. Also assume that I will buy this magazine for the next two years.

After dropping a book (a math book, for instance) it falls half way to the floor. It will, subsequently, fall three quarters of the way to the floor, then seven eighths of the way, then fifteen sixteenths of the way and so on and so on. I dropped a book about 20 times, and without exception, it went all the way to the floor every time. How is this possible?

This is an actual case from industry.
I was solving problems like that by calculus, in first year university, but now in industry we use ready-made tables and graphs and soon forget what we know. They should be banned.
