hmmm... let me rewrite this a bit..
a(a+5) = 14 - Y
if a = 0, then we have 0=14-Y and Y = 14
if a = -1 then we have -4 = 14 -Y and Y = 18
if a = 1 then we have 6 = 14 - Y and Y = 8
so you can see, there are many answers.. probably a curve of some kind.. so.. let's use a = X and rewrite the equation:
x(x+5) = 14-y
x^2 + 5x +y -14 = 0
or...
y = -x^2 -5x +14.. plot this
or.. with your original variable
? = -a^2-5a +14.. which is a parabolic curve

a(a + 5) = 14
a^2 + 5a = 14
a^2 + 5a - 14 = 0
This can be factored:
(a - 2)(a + 7) = 0
This is a true statement if either factor = 0, so set each factor to zero and solve for a.
a - 2 = 0
a = 2
a + 7 = 0
a = -7
You expect two solutions because the equation is a quadratic (degree 2).
