I think because they think with the analytical part of the brain more so than the creative/social side. So the concept of people and their unpredictable personalities is just a little to much, so they retreat into the world they are more comfortable in, it feels more secure and less difficult to handle. So to those on the outside looking in someone like this seems distant, aloof and well frankly eccentric in a calculated way, different in my opinion then being eccentric in a crazy creative like way, like say an actor or a musician.

I began as a mathematician, then switched to Philosophy and ended up with Sociology...it was a learning journey. My peers in Math were just normal, fun loving and caring. I think when you are in the rarified air of thoretical math you tend to ignore the social aspects of life and hence seem wierd. Alos, many who spend so much time in their own mind tend to get a little frustrated at the stupidity of others who do dumb things by depending only on their own 'feelings'. It is a strange andf wonderfull world we live in.

Which is stranger and more eccentric:

A) Devoting your time and energy to solving great problems that have puzzled mankind for centuries.

b) Devoting your time and energy to finding a really, really, REALLY cute pair of shoes.

They think on a different plane to fulfill their job obligations. Therefore, they appear to be eccentric to the non-scientist. When you come down to it, in our own way, each of us has many eccentriticies.

We see the world differently than you do.

Until I was in my early 40s, I just couldn't understand why other people didn't think like me. Why was it that things that are obvious to me are so unclear to others (and vice versa).

Finally -- it hit me, I was the one who thinks differently.

Because if they acted the same or done things the same way,it wouldn't be eccentric.

Why should it irritate you? This is a free country. You do what you love. They do what they love. Give 'em a break.. They're probably coming up with stuff that will make your life easier someday...
