Why is it difficult to have a circuit with both high current and high voltage?

I can't think how this would occur or why they are hard to meet!

I've met several senior engineers and have an impression that most (if not all) of them are allergic to NEMA. They prefer IEC for electric motors, even they dislike to see the word "TEFC".
How about you? Do they regard NEMA as "old engineering school" ?

I've got a 0.5hp rated ac motor controller, and a 0.5hp rated motor. 208V 3ph. I want to power up the motor's stator coils without the rotor inside of it (magnetic field experiment). When I try to run it without the rotor, the controller quickly goes into overload mode. Why? Does the rotor spinning actually decrease the stator current?
(note: I am able to run the stator from 0-10Hz, any higher and it overloads or faults)

I'm doing a project on solar energy. The only thing I have not found was the efficiency of solar energy compared to other kinds of existing or future/possible kinds of energy. Does anyone know of any sites or any facts that would help me? It'd be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much in advance.

Crude oil is heated to about 1250 degrees farenheit. It still doesnt catch fire. I understand that gasoline is 'derived' from crude and am not confusing the two. Still, the crude oil has enough flammability to catch fire if it touches a direct flame. Yet, it withstands boiling upto such high temperatures. How? Why?

I have a solenoid valve just like this http://www.globalspec.com/ImageRepository/ProductAreaImages/2007/4/903/large.jpg and its rated 120 VAC/26VA (3 prongs, one for ground) . I also have a horizontal level switch for liquid like this http://germes-online.com/direct/dbimage/50279527/Level_Switch.jpg with rating 120 VAC/0.28 A (the switch will connect when the water level reach the target) normally open.

How can I wire them so that when the level reached the valve will close and water will not flow into the tank? The switch is inside the tank and the valve connecting the pipe for feed water. Thanks
