The Americans will tell you it was Philo Taylor Farnsworth (what a name!). The Russians and RCA will tell you it was Vladimir Zworykin. Like all complex devices, the television has many contributing inventors.

Scottish inventor, John Logie Baird, the father of this pervasive technology, first publicly demonstrated television on 26 January 1926, in his small laboratory in the Soho district of London. Although large companies with great financial support were also working on the problem of television, Baird managed to surpass them all with very little money, a handful of unpaid helpers and equipment pieced together using rather unconventional materials. For example, Baird's choice of mechanical scanning as the most effective way of achieving true television required the use of spinning discs -- which of financial necessity were made of hatboxes and mounted on a coffin lid.

Scottish John Logie Baird in Europe and US American Charles Jenkins in USA around same time invented the mechanical TV.
But Baird was first to demonstrate his Television to public, and was first on broadcasting programs at BBC and also was first to put earliest TV set on the market which was costing like an expensive Rols-Royce at the time.

The electronic TV (with scanning tube) was invented by Russia born American Vladimir Zworykin and US American Philo Farnsworth. Zworykin has the patent and independently Philo built the first electronic TV set.

John Logie Baird

The question was who invented television not who invented the electron scanning tube. Baird demonstrated moving pictures in Selfridges in 1925.

Zworykin held the patent for the electron scanning tube in 1923 but couldn't make it work until 1934
Farnsworth actually made a scanning electron tube but not until 1927

So who invented television? It was Baird!

Philo Farnsworth! And he first thought of it at the age of 14!

Addendum: All right, in response to all those that say Baird (or some other) was the original inventor of television, Philo was the first to invent the concept of raster television. He got the idea while he was plowing the corn fields.
