Earth Sciences & Geology - March 2007

[Selected]: All categories Science & Mathematics Earth Sciences & Geology

For the past half century and more scientists, inspired preachers and the general public have discussed an impending geological catastrophe that will surely devastate large areas of the west coast of the USA, causing (at a conservative estimate) the wholesale destruction of large areas of California, including the submergence beneath the sea of the entire city of Los Angeles.

Given that this terrible event is not a fantasy but an event that is certain to occur (and supporting which is now a mass of evidence from geological and all earth scientists) the only remaining question is when this awful event will occur, one must wonder whether, in view of all these warnings, the population of Los Angeles are mentallly retarded in not having acted on these warnings during the many decades in which this evidence and these warnings have been given.

Is it not crazy, as things now stand ?

I understand that unit cells represent the gemometrical 3-D atomic structure. What I don't understand is the diagrams that are in many mineralogy books (I am new to this stuff!) that have flat geometric type pictures such as silicates -micas... repeating for instance (I think thay are one-dimentional). Are those disgrams just showing layers of atoms that comprise
the unit celss or something else?

there r three pictures.
1st picture is two high mountains with snow on top of both mountains and the mountains r separated by a small river. the 2nd picture shows the mountain a year later but this time the two mountains have lost the snow and have gotted shorter and the little river became bigger. the 3rd picture shows the same mountains 2 years later and this time the mountains are like hills(the mountains r really short) and the river between them is like a huge river.

Questions:
1-what procces caused the the mountain in the 1st picture over time? explain the process.
