An elderly cousin was telling me about a large barrel or vat that was situated outside her house in upstate New York in the early 1900's. The vat/barrel contained a white substance that provided an off-gassing that supplied fuel for gas lamps used in homes. Would anyone know what this substance/process might have been?

>>>Water dissociates into H+ and OH- each having conc of 10^-7 but acid adds more H+ ions. Even if the reaction proceeds in reverse direction there cannot be a limit to added H+ ions as they are being added externally.
>>>If h+ ion conc refers only to the ions produced by pure water when acid is mixed then why is it that for solving numericals we use conc of acid with no reference to water. Eg pH of 10^-3 Molar HCl is 3.

We have reason to believe that during a paternity test for a child custody case that the mother may have replaced the alleged fathers swabs with her own since she was not tested. She worked at the lawyers off the test was done at and the envelope with test was handed to her unsealed. The test for the mother was missing from the kit. Is it possible to tell if the DNA submitted on the swab was from a male or female? Would that require additional testing or does anyone know if that is part of the standard DNA paternity testing?

I am in chemistry, and we've been learning about mass, volume, and density. I have a few jems that I need to weigh in either grams or carats, and I was wandering how I could find the mass of these objects without using a triple beam balance. i would like to be able to use a normal house-hold appliance.
