I am in chemistry, and we've been learning about mass, volume, and density. I have a few jems that I need to weigh in either grams or carats, and I was wandering how I could find the mass of these objects without using a triple beam balance. i would like to be able to use a normal house-hold appliance.

What other values / instruments are you allowed to use?
Do you know the density of the gems?
Since you are doing a density lab, the obvious thing to due would be to use the density of the gems in coordination their their volumes to find their mass.
density = mass / volume
However, perhaps you are wanting to find the gems' mass in order to find their density later on.

Very easy float a weighted test tube in water along with the gems
make a mark accurately of the water level,take out the gems .now fill water in a graduated pipette [0.1 cc graduation]and re float the test tube slowly add the water from pipette to the test tube till the water is in level to the mark.note down volume of the water from the pipette.if you put say 5.2 cc of water then the weight of gems is 5.2 gm.if you want carat simply multiply it with 5 you will have in this case 26 carats of gems.you can even weigh a horse or elephant in this way .simply note down how many litters of water it took.I sincerely hope that you got the idea.

How about using one of those food scales. You know the one's people use for dieting?
Or find a drug dealer near you. They should have a nifty pocket scale!

If you have one of those really cool scaled like in my tech class. it's like a circle, and it measures the the nearest tenth of a gram. only druggies try to steal them a lot...
