Chemistry (Science & Mathematics) - June 2006

I am currently working in the electrochemistry field. I have to explain pH and the effects of salts (specifically NaCl) on the pH of solutions to a non-science person. The only way I can think is in terms of equations, stoichiometry, and overall definitions. Any help would be appreciated.

Can anyone help with this distillation question please!?

When distilling cyclohexanol to get cyclohexene, why do you shake saturated sodium chloride solution with the crude alkene? Does this help to remove impurities in some way? I can't find the answer anywhere! Also, why is anhydrous calcium chloride added to the cyclohexene? Is it to remove excess water from the alkene? Any help would be much appreciated!!
