Can anyone enlighten me as to how the process of autumnal (fall) colours in leaves originated? One would think that (in evolutionary terms) there couldn't be anything to gain from a stunning display of autumn colours, and that it would be more energy efficient for the trees to simply let their leaves simply shrivel up and drop off as winter approaches. So what's in it for the trees?

I have a vine that came up voluntarily and looks like a watermelon vine. It has produced small fruits from yellow flowers that look like watermelons except they're covered with stickers. Is this a watermelon or a thorny weed?

if you took a typical green house, made it air tight and made it a controlled envirement so that there a certain percent of CO2 in the like 90% or so and the other 10 % was normal air could the plants grow and possibly even grow better than in a normal enviroment,(if they where still in dirt and watered regulary)

I am researching counter reactions to preservatives on various plants and Marijuana is on the list. This is not for illegal consumption. Other plants preserve rather will if dried and kept sealed without direct sunlight however, marijuana is unique in that it is highly susceptible to molding. Comparative of course to other plants such as passion vine and salvia divinorum. This is in no way intended to condone the usage of marijuana or any other illegal substance.

I live in Los angeles and I know that our sewage systems run down to a plant by Santa Monica Piers. I'm interested to know if it is possible for a Avacado seed which is flushed down the toilet to make it through the sewage system and plant then released into the ocean would it be able to make it's way to catalina island possibly land on shore and become a tree.

It's a simple premise, even if a dolphin picked it up and dropped it off.

I bit just right into a strawberry the other day, and noticed a gas exchange between the hollow part and the surrounding air, meaning there was a pressure difference. That got me wondering, what is the gas inside a strawberry? How does it get there? Is it just air from wherever the berry was grown, or is it mostly CO2 because it's a plant?
