I saw this plant while out walking yesterday, in the Highlands of Scotland. It was in a wooded dark, wet area, it was growing flat along the ground spreading out in an uneven pattern, dark greenish grey on top and the underneath of the leaves were white with fleshy spines which seemed to attach it to the mossy ground beneath.

It might not be native as it was in an old overgrown Victorian estate and they introduced many non-native species to their gardens. I have never seen anything like it before and without a name it is proving difficult to searh for it online!!!!

how does male pollinate them?
for example china boy holly and china girl holly?
how many china boys are needed to pollinate say 5 china girl hollies?

does this always take place in spring time?
is that why pollen is soo bad then?
and this pollination allows what to happen?

(sorry, i am new to this stuff)

Ok this may sound like a silly question for people who have tried the seeds before, but wherever i look it tells you to scrape some fungus like substance off of the seeds before taking them... Now, looking at the seeds i have i dont really see any 'fungus-like' stuff on the surface, and i tried scraping one of the seeds to see if there was anything under it but im getting nothing... i cut the seed in half and there's another little seed inside that looks kind of like a tiny, peeled sunflower seed - is that what im supposed to use or what?

Any suggestions would be appreciated and please serious anwers only. thanks
