Zoology is the study of animals and botany is the study of plants. They have commonalities in that they both study morphology of the organisms, etc. SO HOW WOULD YOU DISTINGUISH A PLANT FROM AN ANIMAL?
Plant vs. Animal: green/chlorophyll - Not green/no cholor.
Autotrophic Heterotrophic, makes own food digest organic, non motile/ highly motile, No nervous or have both systems
excretory system , Cell division restricted Generalized cell division throughout org. to certain regions call
Meristems (undifferentiated regions)
Cell bound by non- No cell walls only cell memb. living cell wall w/cellulose Problems with this system and concept esp. for some forms of organisms
Alga - Euglena
Green, photosynthetic Highly motile, both Autotrophic and Heterotrophic
Fungi Look like plants, have structure that resembles plant stems, but
but no fungi are green, none are Autotrophic all are Heterotrophic
Green animals. Birds and reptiles
Stationary animals (marine barnacles, sea fans, etc.)
New concept! Why does it have to be either a plant or an animal? Why not another life form. (Chickens really are birds)
New concept, not just two kingdomsbut five kingdoms
Classification starts at the cellular level
Five Kingdoms are
Monera - Bacteria - cyanobacteria (blue green algae)
Protista Protozoa, Algae, Slime Molds
Fungi - Molds, mildews, mushrooms lichens, Many different types
Plantae - true plants
Animalia - Animals.

Botany is the scientific study of plantlife. As a branch of biology, it is also sometimes referred to as plant science(s) or plant biology. Botany covers a wide range of scientific disciplines that study the structure, growth, reproduction, metabolism, development and diseases of plants. The study of plants and botany began with tribal lore, used to identify edible, medicinal and poisonous plants, making botany one of the oldest sciences. From this the scope of botany has increased to include the study of over 550,000 kinds or species of living organisms.
