I've read about the Van Allen radiation belt and have come to discover that American scientists had no idea it existed at the time, and did not develop any materials into the astronauts suits or the spacecraft to defend against it. In all reality they would have died from overexposure to the radiation had they gotten away from the earths orbit, much less the moon. Is there information I'm missing somewhere or is this a good piece of evidence? Just curious. I know it seems by all accounts that the event occurred, but the more I look into it the less it seems likely. I heard that lockheed martin is also developing a craft to take man back to the moon. Wouldn't their project be a good benchmark to compare the original lunar landing to?
