I watched Nova last night on PBS concerning the black hole in the center of the Milky Way.. My brain was spinning in my head. They were talking about events occurring millions of light years away. Doesn't that mean that they occurred millions of years ago? The scentists were speaking in the present tense. I could not get past this confusion and got very little out of this show. Could someone "un-confuse" me? thanks

Ok, so in the winter time the Earth is further away from the sun on it's aphelion part of the orbit around it thus it is colder. In the summertime it is on it's perihelion thus it is warmer (I suppose depending on where one lives on the planet). So how does the sun keep it's brightness intensity when we are further away but not it's radiation (heat) intensity?
