Clouds in the atmosphere of the earth (neglecting smoke and smog) are either water droplets or ice crystals, and some have both. Cumulus and stratus type clouds are water droplets (condensed on some extremely minute particle in the atmosphere), while cirrus type clouds are ice crystals. Cumulonimbus (thunderstorm clouds) are water vapor in the lower, cumulus type, portion, but ice crystals in the upper portion (the anvil, so called). In the tropics clouds can create precipitation from the water droplets alone (because there is so much atmospheric moisture), but in temperate to high latitudes snow forms first, then melts to form rain.
