The Hubble Space Telescope is a telescope. It does not have a zoom lens.

Because it's not necessary. There are plenty of closeups of Mars from orbiting satellites that are better than anything Hubble can take. In fact, Hubble is much better at taking deep space images. It's not even possible for Hubble to take decent photos of the Moon because the Moon is moving too fast for Hubble's tracking and exposure time. It's like looking across the street with an astronomical telescope.

How "close up" do you want them to get? Close enough to see the "face" on Mars? Not possible -- the "face" and the "smiley-face crater" are way too small to be resolved by Hubble.

I mean, at its closest approach, Mars is what, about 34.6 MILLION miles away? That means that the smallest object Hubble can resolve at that distance is, oh, about 17 **MILES** in diameter. And the "face" is a rock about 2 miles in its longest dimension -- wouldn't even fill a single pixel on the CCD cameras.

But other posters are correct -- Hubble has taken plenty of pictures of Mars -- great pictures. And they're available online to anyone who bothers to look for them. Check out the references.

Why would you need it? We have thousands of close up pictures of Mars taken from Mars probes, ever since the 1980s. They are published on the web for anyone to see.

I forget where they are, but go to the NASA site and surf through that (just Google on "NASA").

Hubble will never match probes that take pictures from just miles above the Mars surface.

And don't get so bent out of shape until you know more. You just make a fool of yourself.

Some people will continue to think that there are little green men on Mars no matter how many pictures, evidence you give them. they think we never went to the Moon, that Area 51 is hiding wrecked spacecraft, and that NASA is hiding the TRUTH. The mars orbiters have given us the best, close up look at the total planet Mars, the rovers have given us microscopic looks inside Martian rocks. And still, the UFO wannabes come out of the woodwork, too lazy or too dumb to do the research themselves to find the TRUTH. They should go back to smokin weed, banging their heads in time with the music and trying to figure out how to get into ol Mary Jane Rottencrotche's britches and leave us alone.

What are you on about? The Hubble took plenty of pictures of Mars, some of which are close-ups. Most of them are available for public viewing at the link below.
