Meteors can vaporize and break apart, thus "explode". That is probably what you saw.

Add to your question and tell us how bright was it. For instance, brighter than full moon? Did it light up the ground? Would it have cast a shadow?

I saw one once from the Arabian desert - it was the most amazing thing I have seen in the sky. You are lucky.

Some bolides can momentarily light up the sky brighter than daylight.

The green colour is ionisation of the atmosphere as it burns into it. It is similar effect to the green color you get in the Aurora.
