Considering that all of the current line up of space vehicles use rocket engines and that the space shuttle uses massive tanks full of fuel to lift out of earths gravitational pull, the hubble and other space-probes relied on the gravitational pull of other planets for its trajectory, how then can we consider rocket engines for Intergalactic travel involving light years and thats assuming that as Humans we can cope with it ?

I noticed on another question I asked earlier people suggested Ion drives, Solar sails and Space elevators. In the question I was asking about Nuclear rockets. What are some other ideas about future ways to get into and travel thru space.

A faint memory when I was two I was curious like any other two year old and travel from galaxy to galaxy exploring other planets until I ran into a hostile solar system and wipe out 3 planets and seriously inflicted damage on a fourth where I spoke to their ruler about the incident who had interpeters, I tried to explain to him what my people look like and their culture he could bearly understand I departed and found my navigation console faded in and out and was pirated with phoney navigation I reluctantly landed on this planet where I laugh at the people some kind of a joke I remember he must interpeted from ear about the planet name earth and the details misconstrude all the people are synthsize from toads spiders and things no real humans affirm as yet. Tell me is this so I have been maroon here on this fake replica of interpentation whats it like on your side?

This is a proven technology that could be the future of space travel that requires less fuel with higher output.

This is some notes on the subject from the included links:

Sean O'Keefe, has talked up nuclear propulsion for about a year. He requested $125M to start the effort in NASA's 2003 budget. Now, Project Prometheus has been announced, and appears to have the blessing of the Bush White House. The objective of Project Prometheus is to speed up travel around the solar system.

During the years from 1956 to termination in 1971, the programs accomplished the following records:
1) Highest power - 4500 megawatts thermal power
2) 5500 degress Fahrenheit exhaust temperature
3) 250,000 pounds thrust
4) 850 seconds of specific impulse
5) 90 minutes of burn time
6) thrust to weight ratios of 3 to 4

I didn't even realize that people could possible refuse to believe one of the most important events in the history of mankind. I would like to know why you don't believe it, if you are of the it-never-happened mind-set? I'm not trying to offend anybody (to each his own, totally), I'm just shocked and horrified and would like to try to understand this mind-boggling phenomenon.

I believe this would be a big step towards going anywhere else in the solar system.

Also I would think it would be best to put the base underground to avoid possible damage from astroids, with only the landing and launch pads on the surface.

Once you had small area underground that would support life it wouldn't be to hard to create entire city over time

Give me your own thoughts about this. Thanks

I'm offering some theories, but would like to know more:
- We're the only planet with some sort of civilization
- Inhabited planets are too far apart for space travel, due to speed of light restrictions or something else
- Civilizations advanced enough to build ultrafast space ships also don't want to visit other planets (for moral reasons, or maybe they think it's too boring, or they developed an advanced cyberspace to simulate anything, including space travel)
- Civilizations across the universe evolved at about the same speed following the big bang, so other planets are still building better space ships like we do
- All civilizations that evolved to the point where they might soon build ultrafast space crafts blew themselves up with nuclear weapons etc.
- We've been visited by aliens but they (or we) keep it secret (or our memories of it will be erased after visits), or we are in fact alien descendants ourselves

I heard while watching sports TV that some fools are actually thinking about taking away Pluto's status as a planet. Who are the fools? And what's their basis for doing so?
