Astronomy is the study of the Solar System. The planets=Mercury,Venus,Earth,Mars,Jupiter,Saturn,Uranus,Neptune, and Pluto. Don't forget stars too. Dwarfs,Comets,The Sun, shooting stars and constellations. The Sun is not a planet it's a star. The Milky way too a group of stars to make the Milky Way It looks like milk and stars. That's why they called it that. Astronauts go up into space all the time to study the Solar System. Telescopes are used to see the objects in space. Some other things in space are harmful like meteors an asteroids damage grounds. Like meteor showers! Galaxies are in space too like the Andromeda Galaxy and other ones. Space just goes on and on with billions of things waiting to be discovered. They have been researching the Solar system for hundreds of years like In the 1700's Isaac Newton discovered Uranus. In 1969 went to the moon Apollo 13. The Hubble Space Telescope is the biggest telescope in the world and many things have been found by it. They have never studied Pluto because It's too far away and cold in 2016 they are sending a small shuttle to take pictures and bring them back for us to see. Well I have to go now. Now you know what Astronomy is.

There have been a number of definitions as to what is astronomy. To that I would like to add that astronomy is not only the study of heavenly bodies, but also the study of the measuremnt of time.

Keep in mind that all our time measurements are based on the revolution of the earth about the sun, the rotation of the earth on its axis or the speed of light in a vaccum.

The word "astronomy" is constructed of the Greek words "astros," meaning "star" and the word "nomos," meaning "law." Thus the original meaning of "astronomy" was "the art of describing the laws that govern the stars."

In modern times the word is usually used to refer to the branch of physical science that studies and describes celestial bodies and their motions.

You should also familiarize yourself with the word "dictionary." A dictionary is an alphabetical list of words and their meanings, usually bound into a book and commonly found in libraries.
