Before people start flaming me for asking such a question, please bear with me and read my question fully. I've been wanting to get an educated answer to this question for a long time now.

I understand that the society wants to create educated individuals, but how much math is too much for someone who NEVER in his/her life showed any interest or talent toward mathematics and will never go on to become an engineer, scientist, or any profession associated with higher math?

Just how useful are "quadratic/cubic equations", parabolas and hyperbolas for a person who always aspired to be a barber? or an athlete? or mabe a nurse?

Now.. We all need a certain degree of math in life. But after that, learning higher math is simply a waste of time for people who have talent in other fields. If kids were thought according to their ability/talent and not the curriculum, mabe we could be more effective at what we do as a whole? I say higher math is for those who want/need to learn it and use it.

1.) x/7 = x/8 +4
I know the answer is 224, but how do you work it out? I keep getting 43.6 for the answer

2.) 8x/7 - x = x/14 - 9/2
I know the answer to this one too, it is -63, but when I work it out I get 62.78, PLEASE work it out for me so I can see my mistakes.

I am in 9th grade and we've been told by the teachers that at equal temperature and pressure, two gases have the same volume, same number of molecules/atoms and are identical in structure..I didn't understand...
How can this work? I mean..how is it possible?

we had our chem final and my friend and i were disputing an answer.

the question was about a x mL of NH3 of .100 M being titrated with x mL of .100 M HCl

It said:

a- if you had an unknown amt. of water to the HCl, will the resulting pH be too high or too low and why?

I said you would be diluting the HCl so the pH would be higher than it normally would be. My friend said adding water results in more production of H+ which would make the pH lower. Who is right? Or neither?

Then the second part was adding water to the NH3 and the same concept, but I thought the change would be negigible since it is a weak base. My friend has the same logic as before but thought higher and I thought lower.

The last part was using phenophthalein as an indicator and we agreed here. We said that it would be higher since the range for this indicator is 8-9.6....but we may both be wrong??
