If a hurricane is presented with a none stop open warm tropical water were you have no interruptions to its feeder bands,it will last for weeks.
Now lets answer your question, take away that warm water, and the hurricane will weaken and eventually die,as it is a warm core system, meaning that the aw some power is generated by heat or thermal energy from water evaporation, over the warm Caribbean sea or Atlantic ocean.
It can also weaken over open favorable waters by westerly winds sharing its cloud tops,or it venturing in unfavorable atmospheric conditions.it will also loose its character by going over colder waters were moisture is not readily available, and move over to subtropical, extra tropical system, characteristics that is used to describe a system that is no longer a hurricane.
However the real killer is on land as it is immediately cut of from the warm waters of which it is dependent op an,but can still deliver a knock out punch,by strong winds,in some segments of thedieing system,it eventually decrease in strength to a tropical storm and then a strong low pressure, which is in the process of being carried away by a cold front, which is also carried or push to the north and east by the Jet stream,i guess if your reading carefully,i have answered another question for you,why do they turn north and then east?
Hope that helps.
