Boise, Idaho is about 300 miles inland from the nearest point on the Pacific Coast; San Diego is about 1000 miles south of the point down the coast. Assuming the coast is a straight line going north south, C is the point along the coast directly west of Boise. It costs 2 cents/mile to transport a ton of potatoes by truck and 1 cent/mile to transport a ton of potatoes by ship. The Idaho Potato company wants to find the point P on the Pacific Coast to which it should truck it's potatoes before loading them aboard a cargo ship in order to minimize the cost of transporting them from Boise to San Diego. A) Set up the function which the Idaho potato company must minimize. B) find the position of P which minimizes cost.

To estimate the height of a pole, a basketball player exactly 2 m tall stood so that the ends of his shadow and the shadow of the pole coincided. He found that from himself to the end of the shadow measured 1.6 m. Himself to the pole measured 4.4 m. About how tall was the pole?

If you could explain steps for this that would be great too.

OK, I just screwed this up on my discrete math final.

Make me feel dumb.

"If you choose any 5 numbers, there must be a way to sum the squares of 3 such that the result is evenly divisible by 3."

I get that if you choose any 5 numbers, either at least 3 of them are odd or 3 of them are even.

What I couldn't seem to figure out is how to show that the sum of the squares of 3 even or 3 odd numbers numbers is always divisible by 3....?

*sigh*
