In the mathematical example of "24 + 23 + 22 + 21 + 20 + 19 = 129", how would I make a math formula that calculates this for me where "x" is the number of iterations (in this case 6 iterations) I want to arrive at an answer. For example, "24x" (where "x" is the formula), I would get back an answer of 129.

Thanks!

Jamie

Water is released from a conical tank 50 inches tall and 30 inches in radius, and falls into a rectangular tank whose base has an area of 400 square inches. The rate of release is controlled so that when the height of the water in the conical tank is x inches, the height is decreasing at the rate of 50-x inches per minute. How fast is the water level in the rectangular tank rising when the height of the water in the conical tank is 10 inches

Well, I tried it a few times-

1- I lit a match
2- Held it horizontal
3- Watched it burn (till the fire reached my finger: not recommended for kids and silly people... (j/k))

I always observed that the stick was bending upwards as the fire moved on.

Any special reason for such observation?

And man presenting himself as dr greg gave entirely wrong answer without any insight - although I explicitely asked for proof.
Other answers are incorrect too. Therefore, I must repeat the question - please find details in my previous question about two identical balloons. I am warning you that although the answer and the proof does not need any knowledge besides elementary physics, I was posting this question in the alt.physics group for years and nobody was able to answer it. So, if you consider it a challenge please think carefully and give the proof.
