Indeed, nickel is an element and as such does not have a 'formula' (a term reserved for compounds) so its' 'symbol' is Ni.

However, as it is found in nature it is usually found as a mineral(s) (or-ore deposits) as: Nickeliferous limonite: (Fe,Ni)O(OH) and garnierite (Ni,Mg)3Si2O5(OH) and also in pentlandite: (Ni,Fe)9S8.
