If there was a remote control plane up in mid-air, inside a truck, but it was just still in one place, and all of a sudden the truck started to move, then would the plane move with the air inside the truck, or would it hit the back of the truck since it was still?

I'm interested in the curve as a function of the radius r. I have two guesses at this point. Either a parabola or a catenary. I'm not sure about it because I don't fully understand the magnitude of the force that causes the water to move upwards in the first place.

(Assume gravitational force on the water is constant throughout the glass, don't bother to figure in the slight variation from that)

I've taken Physical Geology, Environmental Geology, and Historical Geology at my local community college. Having run out of geology courses the dean said I can do an independent study next term. I am going on to a four year college to complete a bachelors and masters in geology, but not until next fall. What are some interesting concepts to study for this independent study?

I have heard that sailboats can travel faster than the windspeed but nobody has ever been able to tell me how this is possible. Due to the drag of the boat in the water I would think that the boat would always travel slower than the windspeed.

The following correction was printed in the Observer's For the record column, Sunday March 12 2006

In the article below, Dr Milton Wainwright was quoted as saying that red rain lacked DNA. Dr Wainwright has asked us to make clear that currently he has no view on whether red rain contains DNA and that it is physicist Godfrey Louis who is of that view.

There is a small bottle containing a red fluid on a shelf in Sheffield University's microbiology laboratory. The liquid looks cloudy and uninteresting. Yet, if one group of scientists is correct, the phial contains the first samples of extraterrestrial life isolated by researchers.

Inside the bottle are samples lef

I would like to be able to argue this intelligently, but don't know the correct terminology or 'science' behind it. If it's true, than how can this be argued? It seems to me that a burst of electricity at each turn on may increase the cost of per/timeframe usage, however maybe not with today's more energy efficient bulbs. Anyhow, is it true that it costs more to switch than to keep it on, and if so, is there a time when both equal out?

of radius, R = 58.05 cm at the bottom. The cube starts from rest and slides freely down the ramp and around the loop. Find the speed of the block when it is at the top of the loop.

A uniform solid cylinder (m=0.530 kg, of small radius) is at the top of a similar ramp, which has friction. The cylinder starts from rest and rolls down the ramp without sliding and goes around the loop. Find the speed of the cylinder at the top of the loop.
