Ok, so now i get how to do that whole 'Xn+1=Xn-f(x)/f'(x)' part of Newton's Method...but Im having trouble with finding a 'general rule for approximating the radical' when given the other info...

x=sqrt(a) [Hint: f(x)= x^2 - a ]
-------------I came up with (Xn^2+a)/(2Xn)

but now im not sure how to use this new function to approximate the sqrt(7) to three decimal places...help anyone?

The flywheel of a steam engine runs with a constant angular speed of 300 rev/min. When steam is shut off, the friction of the bearings stops the wheel in 2.5 h.
(a) What is the constant angular acceleration, in revolutions per minute-squared, of the wheel during the slowdown?
b) How many rotations does the wheel make before stopping?
(c) At the instant the flywheel is turning at 75 rev/min, what is the tangential component of the linear acceleration of a flywheel particle that is 50 cm from the axis of rotation?
(d) What is the magnitude of the net linear acceleration of the particle in (c)?

When running a linear regression between Degree of Urbanization and the Ranking of a country on the Human Development Index the result is that there is a "__________?????" relationship (R-squared = 0.51). This means that 49% of the variance of Human Development Index Ranking is not explained by the variance in the Degree of Urbanization. Meaning that being highly urbanized doesn’t necessary relate to or mean that a country will Rank higher on the Human Development Index.

Can someone please verify my logic behind my statistical claim and identify the meaning of R²=0.51? I want to fill in that blank.

This is for extracting various alcohols and water from a solution without having to maintain the solution at a very high temperature. I think it might be less energy intensive this way, but I have no data on energy needed to maintain a vaccum. What is the wattage on some of the pumps able to do this? Could it be cost prohibitive compared to just boiling at full temp?

Yes, I'm aware that the laws of thermodynamics say that perpetual motion machines are impossible, but just imagine that some mad scientist miraculously invents one. What could such a machine be used for? Also remember that perpetual motion machines come in two types... 1. ones that just run forever with 100% efficiency and... 2. ones that are more than 100% efficient (they basically create energy from nothing) What would be some practical uses for both types? Use your imaginations! :)

What does this mean? I can wake up in the middle of the night or first thing when I wake up, (if soemtimes I sleep late, like 10:10 or 11:11. Also, I often go to tthe store and my total will ring up the same amount like $23.23, or otherwise I get the same amount of change back, like $7.77, weird hey? One day, I went to two different stores and my total was exactly the same. WHY? It creeps me out.
