Using con's very broad definition of socialism, America is in fact already socialist. So many of the things libs / progressives worked for is already law.

We have public education for the masses, state subsidized and controlled universities, student grants, subsidized student loans, job training, GI Bills, 40 hour work weeks, overtime pay, minimum wage, workplace safety laws, workman's compensation, unemployment insurance, social security, medicare, medicaid, extra health care programs for kids that don't qualify for medicaid, progressive taxes, laws against pollution, laws against corporate fraud, public transportation, public streets and highways, public utilities, a public space exploration organization, public housing, government armed forces, etc, etc.

We force banks to insure with the federal government (in order to avoid another Great Depression) and force corporations to obey consumer protection laws.

Of course that's if you are a conservative. Our current president does some what make me feel ashamed to call myself a conservative. He hasn't done anything substantive to stop illegal immigration. He supported a bill that would have given amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants. He hasn't been fiscally conservative. He's an incompetent leader. His policies have made the United States hated around most of the world. The only thing that he's really helped conservatives on are his supreme court nominations.

Since that's where your immediate community is affected? If you do, why? And if you don't, why not?

Isn't voting for your local school board and local judge just as important as your senator or the president?

At a time when Turkey may invade Iraq (which would distrupt US supply lines and could destabilize some regions), why are some representatives in congress trying to pass a resolution condemning turkey for the armenian genocide that occured around 100 years ago?

An oligarchy is a form of government in which all power is vested in a few persons or in a dominant class or clique; government by the few.

So yeah we have the congress, but come on! The "average", middle-class man can not be President. The "average" man can not even become a Senator.

Our country is ruled by the wealthy. Lobbiest and corporations replace the voice of the people.

When will be get back to true Representative Democracy?

What do you think?

he gave us the Warren Supreme Court, shool integration, a national highway system...
He ended Joe McCarthy's career and he ended his own career with a televised warning to beware the growing influence of a military armed by taxpayer-subsidized corporations.
Sounds like a bleeding heart to me.

Socialism - a theory or system of social organization that advocates the vesting of the ownership and control of the means of production and distribution, of capital, land, etc., in the community as a whole. http://www.dictionary.com/

I trust the people in the Government before I trust "Big Business" I have dealt with people in business. I do not trust them. They are the most selfish humans I have ever met.

Partly it’s a reaction to what happened in 2000, when the American people chose Mr. Gore but his opponent somehow ended up in the White House. Both the personality cult the right tried to build around President Bush and the often hysterical denigration of Mr. Gore were, I believe, largely motivated by the desire to expunge the stain of illegitimacy from the Bush administration.

And now that Mr. Bush has proved himself utterly the wrong man for the job — to be, in fact, the best president Al Qaeda’s recruiters could have hoped for — the symptoms of Gore derangement syndrome have grown even more extreme.

The Armenian genocide is thought to be the second most studied and documented example of genocide. I understand that we need to make temporary alliances with less savory nations to assist us in reaching our long term strategic goals (example: Pakistan). But Turkey is part of NATO. I always considered NATO a organization of countries with shared core beliefs. I do not "blame" the present government in Turkey for the atrocities committed in waning days of the Ottoman Empire, but they need to acknowledge it and try to understand why it happened so as to prevent it from happening gain. If they cannot acknowledge it, we should terminate our alliance with them.
