Republicans are saying that any help the government gives to the people is "socialism" or even "communism" and that a socialistic government will seek to control people's lives. They understand the real definition, but by broadening it, they hope to scare independent voters into voting Republican

If we were to use cons broad definition of the word socialism, then America is already socialist.

Just think about it. Public education for the masses, state universities, public highways and public transportation, public parks, state parks, social security, medicare medicaid, job training, subsidized student loans, student grants, GI Bills, work place safety laws, 40 hour works weeks, overtime pay, minimum wage, laws against pollution, fraud in labeling and advertising, etc, etc.

Socialism is a bad idea. It fails everytime it is tried. Learn from history.

The lying politicians that make up the governments aren't selfish? Do you not look at the papers or watch the news?

In practice freedom becomes necessarily usurped and trampled on due to abuse of power, economic impossibility, and unforeseen and unintended variables among other things. Because of socialism's inherent failures, it tends to resort to extreme measures.
