My wake-up call came from Brass Eye in 2001, when they showed a satirical take on the moral panic of paedophilia, with 'name & shame' campaigns almost every day in the populist newspapers. Celebrities came out of the woodwork to put their name to a spoof charity called 'Nonce Sense' - of course they didn't know they had been had until it was too late. The tabloid press were happy until they learnt they had also been strung along. After they were found out, the press became so harsh they forgot to hide the things that made them well-read amongst a large percentage of Britons. Chris Morris, the creator was decried by most of the tabloid press - usually next to pictures of Royalty, dressed in bikinis - Beatrice and Eugenie (13 and 11 at the time) - Daily Mail, and in the Daily Star, the story next to Charlotte Church's breasts (she was 15 then, with the headline 'She's a big girl now'). Hysteria and hypocrisy. Some awakening!
