to treat people in there institutions so badly, the laundries etc

People were sexually abused, and the nuns worked them like slaves, until the 90's and nothing was done about it

How can these people claim to be doing Gods work...........

Please explain to me because I don't understand?

Things have still not been put right though, and although the Catholic Church has apoligised nothing has been done to correct the situation......

The word Penitents on the mass grave memorial in one of the Magdalen launderies...this women were slaves and never had chance to commit any sort of sin, they were victims of there society...........

I am in shock that this was still happening even in the 90's, and the goverment seem to be closing all doors to anyone trying to sort this situation out, these women were put into care at a young age, and kept there til they died, they worked like slaves earning the nuns money to play around on the stock market with, they would of been better treated in a Bankok jail......Its just one big conspirency

Most of the Irish are thoroughly ashamed and many were unaware of what happened and it is poignant example of what what can occur when a government gives power and control to a body such as the church. Thankfully, it could never happen again and the church has much less influence on Irish society.

Catholicism is enshrined in the Irish constitutiion. Just over a week ago an item on the radio mentioned that the Irish government can not condone abortion because it is against the Irish constitution.
I was raised roman catholic. There are more hypocritical, uncaring, corrupted roman catholics in the world than there are rats in the London sewer system i reckon.
My philosophy is now that IF there is good and evil ... the evil in all it's cunningness has managed to displace the good. Being cunning as it is, it manages to make many believe it is the good. Many others know better. Lets hope time will be kind to them.

Because the constitution was created in 1947, by De Valera who had a fantasy view of Catholic Ireland. He believed in the church could do no wrong, and allowed Priests to have an inordinate amount of influence on the government.

Also the general public were bullied and were taught never to question the clergy. My mother who was naturally left handed was beaten with a stick and forced to write with her right hand, the left being the hand of the devil. But when she told her mother, her mother just told her to do as the nuns said.

It was a national disgrace, and the people who brought the abuse to light should be congratulated

Exactly mate, and thats why alot of people only CLAIM to be doing gods work!! It is a great cover up for sordid activities isnt it. Who would suspect anything untoward going on in a monastry? The same thing happened in Ireland around the catholic childrens homes about 40 years ago, there was a great big investigation because of allegations about a high church priest who indecently assaulted young boys!! These are followers of God, these are dirty nobodies looking for a cover-up!!

My mother was brought up in an orphanage (Methodist) and she tells stories of how awful things were.
I have some experience of it and I think it is because many believe sincerely that they have to get you into shape for God. Religious zeal. Also, you have to have experienced love and affection before you can love someone else. And many of these people came to the church looking for something and a strict order does not teach them kindness.
Does that make sense?
Religious zeal, a harsh background and then living in an institution does not make for the love as taught by Jesus Christ. Unfortunately.

I congratulate Sinead O Connor for her bravery whenever she ripped up a picture of the pope in the usa after singing a song, she created an uproar to an ininformed US public about the goings on in Ireland, she may have suffered a few album burnings and got booed off stage but she knew what she was doing and used her celebrity for the greater good. I don't think that we in Ireland would ever let anyone suffer in silence like that ever again. Thanks be to celebrities.

I dont think the authorities actually allowed them to treat people badly.
I suppose it was assumed they were good people doing a good thing.

Whats there to understand - you get horrible people in all walks of life, and now thank goodness the authorieies are realising this and keeping a beady eye on them as much as possible.

Maybe just maybe, god is not the answer but a mechanism to do as you like in the name of god. Throughout history we have seen many cases of religions doing wrong to peaceful people in almost every nation in any century.

This has always been a mystery to me, too.. :(

..I think sometimes people get so caught up with 'doing what's right at all costs' that they don't know where to stop themselves when they screw up...

It's like they draw the line so far back, that once they cross it (bound to happen eventually), they have no point of reference to figure out when to stop...
