My wake-up call came from Brass Eye in 2001, when they showed a satirical take on the moral panic of paedophilia, with 'name & shame' campaigns almost every day in the populist newspapers. Celebrities came out of the woodwork to put their name to a spoof charity called 'Nonce Sense' - of course they didn't know they had been had until it was too late. The tabloid press were happy until they learnt they had also been strung along. After they were found out, the press became so harsh they forgot to hide the things that made them well-read amongst a large percentage of Britons. Chris Morris, the creator was decried by most of the tabloid press - usually next to pictures of Royalty, dressed in bikinis - Beatrice and Eugenie (13 and 11 at the time) - Daily Mail, and in the Daily Star, the story next to Charlotte Church's breasts (she was 15 then, with the headline 'She's a big girl now'). Hysteria and hypocrisy. Some awakening!

Not at all surprised most of the answers are American. We British are shy when up against it.

Honey, I was alerted to the mental condition of all of us stupid human monkeys globally while still in elementary school (I think they call it primary school there?) Almost nothing surprises me anymore and I never trust what the press has to say about world events - especially CNN. They only show one side of the story anymore and it's usually the side the station owners favor. Or the side that the station owner's favorite politician or national leader favors. Either way it's a one-sided story.

The worst case was the coverage post 9/11. Up to that point I thought the American public were too sophisticated to be panicked into surrendering their hard earned freedom.

Over the last few years the slavish endorsement of the corporate media, and its blind acceptance by the majority of Americans, has caused me to realize the world is in a lot more trouble than I thought.

The corporations are in control. How can we stop the consumption of our planet before we use it up, when the businessmen and their elected flunkies won't act?

sure i stopped reading the paper years ago . there are some things that should not be written in detail . some crimes should just be written like this the man then did an unspeakable thing to the other person .
i am sure some crimes would not happen as they do if the person who did it had not seen or heard of it before from the media. yes i find they will have a story of some unspeakable thing on then follow up with the story of a new kind of swim wear that gets painted on .

although this is a fictional piece... i hope... lol. this brings up a good perspective about human nature and the idea of traditions. i had to read this short story in an English class, which was the best class i have ever taken in my life, and i stuck with me. i also wrote a research paper on it for the class. if you could read it that would be better but watching the film should give you the same effect. "The Lottery", "based on one of Shirley Jackson's spookier stories, this made-for-TV thriller recounts a small New England town's chilling annual ritual, a quasi-pagan affair involving human sacrifice performed in a particularly horrific manner." I will take a different spin on your question.
Yes, I have seen news stories on t.v. that made me change my way of thinking of society where I live in.
Don't judge a book by its cover. One can learn from a filthy rich person and also one can learn from a very poor person.
And t.v. news has gone down hill. News? News isn't about who has shaved their hair off, or how did Anna Nicole die ? for 3 wks? Geezzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
