an inquest is done for a huge number of reasons. most often it is done to see if there could be ways of preventing such a thing from happening again. the coroner orders them and they are most often very useful in finding out some facts that could help prevent similar things from happening .
the stupid government does not follow up on doing the things often enough but they are very useful.

Inquest is just a fancy word for inquiry. When someone dies (especially if it's unexpected), there will often be an inquest to determine the cause of death. Doesn't necessarily have to be a suspicious death, usually a death from anything other than natural causes will prompt an inquest.

An inquest is to find out the cause of death, not to apportion blame (in which circumstances there would be a trial).

The idea behind it is that there are no assumptions made as to the the way in which someone has died. ie. that all of the evidence is heard in one place by a coroner who can then make a judgement on whether any further investigation needs to take place.

Every death has to have a death certificate signed by a doctor explaining the reason for the cause of the death..........For each death that a doctor cannot diagnose...an inquest and post mortem is carried out to find out the cause....Before the person can be cleared for the funeral......

The appearance of anything suspicious that would be the result of any foul play - that could possibly be determined by the inquest.

To find a cause when natural death doesn't seem apparent. Seems this can take years for stars, it's easier to get the cause for an unknown.
