My boyfriend has recently been diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) characterized by an abnormally high platelet count. This puts him at high risk of blood clots and strokes. It is also possible that it could develop into Leukemia.

His doctor has placed him on a platelet reducing medication but he is suffering side effects of constant headaches and nausea. His mood is really depressed as well because of his constant malaise. We've already asked if there are other medications that he could try but were told that the side effects of the other medications included cancer! I know that headaches and nausea are preferable to the risks he faces if he were not on the medication (or if he were on other medications!) but I was wondering if there might be a more holistic approach to reducing his platelet count that might not have such negative side effects?

Thanks for the help!

Recently, I was given an alternative health "recipe" that simply put apple cider vinegar, honey, and garlic together. It could be used as a salad dressing, but OH!.. What a putrid smell!! I've always had a problem with both the taste and smell of vinegar, but the medicinal benefits of it are extremely important, for the treatment of a wide variety of medical conditions. If anyone out there has a simple way to cover up, or eradicate both the putrid smell and taste, without neutralizing the nutritional benefit, it sure would be appreciated! This is the "miracle home remedy" that has been seen circulating in alternative health areas, in recent years, but if you can't get it past your nose, then it won't do much good!

I am currently taking lexapro, anddon't like it. I asked my Dr. about Symbalta and he said that it was too early too know the long term side effects. I realy would rather not take anything, but I just lost my dad and a baby two weeks apart so I'm afraid not to.

I have a girlfriend that snores - she tells me it makes her husband miserable, he can barely sleep etc. She's overweight, but besides losing weight (duh!), what else works? Also, she's used those "Breatheright" snore strips but they don't really seem to work... No, she hasn't had a sleep study; based on her doctor etc she didn't really need it.

i have tried baths, pills like elavil and rozerem, relaxing, counting sheep, and numbers. Even when I am yawning evry 5 seconds, and I have tears running down my face, it takes me like 2-4 hours to fall asleep, no matter how tired I am, And then, once I do fall asleep, I can't wake up for anything!!!

He has been in a convelesant home since this.I am so frustrated with the re-hab he gets, doesn't get.He relies on medi-care and medi-cal for his re-hab.sometimes they stop and then i have to ask for thier help again, not really knowing the guidelines. He has aphisa,so he can't speak for himself. He is unable to walk or do anything for him self.I think the place he is staying is full of kind and caring people, but I can never get a straight answer, any suggestions will be really greatfully appieciated. Also,if anyone knows of any stroke support groups,I'd love to find one in my area.Venice/Santa Monica,California. Thanks in advance.......
