My boyfriend has recently been diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) characterized by an abnormally high platelet count. This puts him at high risk of blood clots and strokes. It is also possible that it could develop into Leukemia.

His doctor has placed him on a platelet reducing medication but he is suffering side effects of constant headaches and nausea. His mood is really depressed as well because of his constant malaise. We've already asked if there are other medications that he could try but were told that the side effects of the other medications included cancer! I know that headaches and nausea are preferable to the risks he faces if he were not on the medication (or if he were on other medications!) but I was wondering if there might be a more holistic approach to reducing his platelet count that might not have such negative side effects?

Thanks for the help!

I have the same problem - I was told to eliminate stress and pressure, and to try to live as healthily as possible - eating right and exercising. I was also told to try yoga and meditation to reduce stess levels in my body. Because I have lots of different health issues, it seems to be weakening my body, so at the same time it's trying to get better, but in the wrong way. My mother had cancer three times, and nearly died from radio therapy. She concentrated on eliminating the stress in her life and really looked after herself. She's alive today so that's what I'm basing my treatment on. Also, my mother started me on a therapy called Bain-Derivative Therapy. It sounds weird and I have to admit I haven't really perservered with it, but my mum swears by it. I'veput a link here - in English it's called Cold Friction Bath. Good luck!!

Answer: Platelets are the smallest cell-like structures in the blood and are important for blood clotting and plugging damaged blood vessels. Platelet counts are usually done by laboratory machines that also count other blood elements such as the white and red cells. Normal platelet counts are in the range of 150,000 to 400,000 per microliter (or 150 - 400 x 109 per liter), but the normal range for the platelet count varies slightly among different laboratories. An elevated platelet count is known as thrombocytosis. The laboratory where the test was performed will be able to tell whether a platelet count of 420,000 represents an elevated value for this laboratory. An elevated platelet count can be observed in people without significant medical problems. Mild to moderately elevated platelet counts are commonly seen when chronic inflammation is present. In other cases a high platelet count can signal a more serious blood problem known as a myeloproliferative disorder (abnormal growth of blood cell elements within the bone marrow). Your doctor may need to perform additional tests to determine the cause of an abnormally high platelet count

What I just looked up was not very promissing sorry to say. Can I suggest the book "You Can Heal your Life" by Louis Hay.....her premise is that disease is caused by Dis-ease. As an example I asked my massage therapist to look up boils, my best friend was plagued by them around the genitals.....well this book listed them as being caused by seething anger....the location indicates things too. It totally fit, she was fruious with her husband because he didn't get fixed when he was supposed to then she woke up to him having sex with her without a condom......of course she loves that third little one, but she is still furious with him for not getting snipped......she doesn't want to have sex so she manifests the anger she feels with boils on that area.....its just an idea but one worth reading.......
