I know, its been asked before, but do you belive in global warming? Why or why not? I need this for a report in school. Don't give me the causes, just the reasons you belive it does or doesn't exist.

How bad do you think global warming is?

I've asked 2 questions to global warming skeptics today, and the amount of misinformation I've received in response has been overwhelming. I can't even keep up to refute it all! Stuff like water vapor is what's causing global warming (rather than being an indicator and amplifier), extreme weather events aren't an early indicator of global warming, human activity is only repsonsible for 5% of atmospheric CO2, carbon dioxide doesn't cause global warming, it only follows it, volcanoes emit more CO2 than humans, etc. etc.

Where the heck does all this misinformation come from?

There are many scientists who believe GW is a natural occurrence and that the climate is always changing. When you have 73 minutes to spare, you should check out this documentary. Keep an open mind and consider that they might be right.

I am, by nature, a skeptic. While I accept that the temperature of the earth is rising, I do not subscribe to the global warming hype for two reasons:

(1) The temperature of the earth is constantly changing, as evidenced by the hypothesized 'little ice age' of the late middle ages. I have not seen evidence which directly links increased CO2 output to temperature change. What I have seen is correlation, but correlation does not, of course, equal causation.
Please note that I do understand the means by which CO2 could theoretically have an impact, as per the greenhouse effect.

(2) I believe that EVEN IF global warming is an anthropologic phenomena, we should NOT take steps to reduce pollution. Doing so would hurt our production, and (a) other countries that decided not to change would simply surpass our productive output, hurting our economy and negating our progress,

Eariler I posed some questions for global warming skeptics as to how they could explain the high temperatures and large numbers of extreme weather events we're currently seeing. Everybody ignored the extreme weather events and dismissed the high temperatures, saying that either 2000 years is an insiginificant amout of time or that high temps aren't necessarily due to higher greenhouse gas concentrations. Thus I have some new questions:

1) Do you admit that we're currently in a state of global warming?
2) Do you admit that carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas?
3) Do you admit that greenhouse gases cause global warming?
4) Do you admit that humans activities create a lot of carbon dioxide?

If you answered 'no' to any question, please explain why (with evidence).

If you answered 'yes' to all, please view the following graph:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Mauna_Loa_Carbon_Dioxide.png

And explain to me what could cause such consistent CO2 increase other than humans.

As I understand it, the Kyoto protocols punishes developed nations for high carbon dioxide emissions. It does not punish nations with developing economies. Although I favor policies which would increase the standard of living for Indian and Chinese citizens, I do not think they should adopt inefficient and wasteful technologies and habits for short term economic gains. To make a more environmentally benign economy, I believe it would be easier to start from scratch, so to speak, than to change existing infrastructure. I believe any carbon reducing treaty ratified by the U.S. should include reductions for all nations, especially developing nations. Having prefaced my question above, was Congress and the Bush administration correct to not ratify this treaty?

Evidence for the MWP comes from around the world, and no contravening explanation has ever been offered - just why were tree lines higher in both the Alps and the Sierra Nevadas? What's a regional anomaly? Are the Alps and the Sierra Nevadas part of one weather region? I didn't know that.

* In summer around the year (north/south), many natural forest fires occur.
* One forest fire for few days is offering smoke & CO2 more than the whole transport means do.
* That in addition to erupting volcanos.
* So it is a naural warming & nothing to do with my & you car.
* Governments use that as an excuse to rob me & you under different name of robbery,(tax).

why aren't these debates slam dunks for the green side? No rational person can read these discussions and claim that they are. Why do they have such a tough time of it? Does that reflect on their poor debating skills, on the fact that it's NOT as settled as they say, or both?

There are a lot of questions here addressed to those who believe the global warming concensus, asking them to explain such and such, and they always do a very good job of it. I've got some questions for the global warming skeptics. If global warming is fiction, or it's not caused by humans, why is it that:

1) Extreme weather events (early indicators of global warming) have been skyrocketing over the past few decades, particularly floods, as seen in this graph?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Trends_in_natural_disasters.jpg

2) 1998 and 2005 were the hottest years in history, 2006 was the 6th hottest in history, the winter of 2006-2007 was the hottest winter in history, and considering the following global temperature graph?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Instrumental_Temperature_Record.png

3) With global temperatures currently significantly higher than at any point in the past 2000 years?

Dont they know there are temperature changes on other planets too? Does that mean they are burning oil there too? But that is hardly ever reported. Also, the past winter was the coldest ever on record here. This means that any temperature change is SOLAR NOT MANMADE.

People should realize that those that push global warming have an agenda. That is why you never see these reach charlatans give up their jets or million dollar homes. Fear is the product they push...

Every time we skeptics point out that certain parts of the world have actually gotten colder or that there are extended cold periods or new record cold temperatures in certain locations, your uniform response is "it's a global average temperature increase, that produces fluctuations rather than uniformly warmer temperatures everywhere at every time."

But whenever we bring up the Medieval Warm Period, you make the opposite argument - that the sum of the parts does not make the whole. We point out that the broader trend when you take into consideration the whole earth was warmer temperatures. But because there was one area in the Pacific where it cooled and because there were a few cool years, it wasn't uniformly warm, therefore the MWP wasn't a true period of global warming.

How do you reconcile these two contradictory arguments?

So I've tried
- talking
- watching the documentary "Inconvenient truth"
- Setting rules ( like turning off the lights, buying a hybrid etc)
- Volunteering
- I've shown pictures

I've completely run out of ideas as to how to get them concerned about this...its pretty difficult when they are so caught up with other stuff.

Thanks in advance.

I'm looking for causes or effects of climate change..
anything quirky..
they shud be able to persuade people to cut down on crabon, or make people aware of the problems.. please help.. im so stuck!

So called experts , usually wrong, cannot predict weather beyond a few days! Gore predicts doom and gloom in 35 years ! The first thermometer was invented in 1525 by Galileo. How can we know anything about world temperature , tens of thousands of years ago?? Pure guess work at best ! Control nuts, pure and simple. Give us some facts ! not concensensus by a bunch of phony "experts". Weather records beyond 200 years are 100% pure guesses ! AND !! If we did not have h2o in our atmosphere , we would all die ! Please stop the insanity!
Get rid of cow farts ,all trees and ALGORE ? That might help ?
