These days, everyone is very concious of climate change. Protecting the environment is a really hot topic and there are clear pushes by the Government to make us all more aware of the dangers of polluting the planet.

However, with air travel now being accessible to so many people that ever before, are we not turning down a wonderful opportunity to see the world, new places and different cultures?

Recycling bins, Reusable plastic bags in supermarkets that earn you points, wall-to-wall advertising everywhere you look on how we're destroying our planet because we dare to leave the TV on standby and about a month ago I was on this station in Liverpool - take a look at these two links:- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liverpool_South_Parkway_railway_station & http://www.merseyrail.org/stations/?iStationId=28
From the first link you'll see it cost double what it was supposed to from £16M to £32m, apparently because they've never heard of flooding; but my real interest and the relevance to this question is in the second link. You'll notice the universal icon - the wheelchair sign, for someone whose disabled - but you'll also notice the text next to this icon i.e. "Limited Only" - well I can tell you from personal bitter experience they most certainly are LIMITED!!!

This brand spanking new station with its bright and breezy staff in their crisp new blue uniforms will inform you that -

Whether global warming is due to human made causes or not is debatable but human beings should think about the future generations and so become environment and nature friendly. Otherwise the day may not be 2 far when Nature/Mother Nature will hit us a bit tooooo bad. Big companies/corporations should go a bit 'green' as they say. Humans should not cross their limit, otherwise nature can destroy all living beings & I believe it may be justified. We have been living on the surface of this fragile planet for some 1000 s of yrs now and we should not try to harm it otherwise there might be a revenge from mother nature if it can be put that way. Its already happening from America to India...floods, tsunamis, earthquakes etc. & so on. I am not only a lover of nature but also respect it. She has kept us alive. Don't you all think so.....!?

This is going to sound stupid, I'm sure. There's a reason I didn't graduate with a biology degree.

The question is this: the ice caps are melting, the the world is warming. However, at least in my area all of the temperature records (hottest/coldest temperature recorded for this date) are always from the first 3-4 decades of the 20th Century. Sometimes they will be from the 1980s.

I guess my logic is based on the assumption that global warming would cause us to be breaking records every day, every year? Or am I thinking too simplistic?

Even with a slow rise in temperatures, global warming isn't just a 21st century issue and has been going on for quite some time.

From Investor's Business Daily, August 10:

"NASA has silently, according to dailytech.com, revised its temperature figures, this time without the apparent Y2K bug that skewed the data. As it turns out, 1934, not 1998, is the hottest year in the continental U.S. since 1880.

"The new numbers also show that four of the country's 10 warmest years were in the 1930s: 1934, 1931, 1938 and 1939. Five of the hottest 10 occurred before World War II. The past 10 years are not as well represented: Only three years from the past decade are among the 10 warmest: 1998, 1999 and 2006."

On either the Discovery channel or Animal Planet they did a special on polar bears. It was depressing seeing all these emaciated bears because their food supply is too hard to get to due to the icecaps melting. They said that in 100 years, (nearly one persons lifetime) polar bears will be extinct... any opinions?

I observe a general consensus that global warming is happening and is caused by human activity. (OK, stop right here if you're a global warming dissenter; this question isn't for you, and I don't want to hear it here.) So, why aren't we doing more? We're not feverishly looking for ways to stop it. The actions of governments so far are a joke. Let's put things in perspective: think about what happened in the US during WWII: the government practically took over the economy, enforced rations, etc. Also, China plans to quadruple their economy, while "only" doubling their output of greenhouse gases. What kind of a commitment is that? Do people really believe that global warming is caused by human activity?

Accepting that we appear to be facing serious climate change issues and taking into account the commercial reality of our societies do you think there is any realistic alternative to nuclear power?

I doubt it ultimately.

WOuld you agree to higher gas taxes to save America? Peak oil, Global Warming and addiction to foreign oil are all real threats to our country and society at large. Most Americans are ignorantly wasting gas with big guzzlers, commuting 2 hours a day and driving everywhere like gas is unlimited. . Higher gas taxes would force more consevation to help prevent these problems greatly which threaten our country's security.

People just seem to pay lip service to the environmental lobby but do not really believe any of the messages on Global Warming. Why? Is it because they come across as condescending and sanctimonies? Or is it because of the rent a Dosser brigade at Heathrow airport who will do anything for a free can of Special Brew? You just no this is going to turn nasty as it’s the only way they can get on TV. Do these people help or hurt the cause?

I don't think it matters one little bit how much petrol of fossil fuel we use. The quicker we use it the quicker it'll be gone and we'll be forced to live back in the stone age. If sea levels rise that'll be good for marine life and bad for humans. if the world warms up by a few degrees it'll be back to the way it was a few million years ago. The planet is always in flux, it is always changing I think it's supreme arrogance by human beings to think that they can control the planet. They can't. If the world becomes overpopulated by mankind without any form of control nature will force control on our numbers the same way it does with any species through famine, disease or uniquely for humans with war. Thats a worry for us but the planet won't give a sh1t and will continue as it always does.

Sorry for the vague wording of the question but I couldn't think of anything more fitting.

I'm not trying to call anyone out here, but I just read this statement "The USA would certainly benefit from a high gas tax, but the population would not stand for it, so it won't happen." posted by a frequenter of this section.

I cannot believe that anyone could actually think this way. When taxes on necessary goods are raised, it only hurts the poor while the rich continue to overconsume. I think that principle is pretty easy to comprehend. And gasoline IS a necessity for many people in America. It is easy to forget that sometimes for those of us who live in areas with good public transportation, but most of America lives in rural areas or small towns and many of them are struggling to make a living.

If we ever have the need to drastically reduce gasoline consumption, it should be a ration where everyone gets an opportunity to purchase an equal amount at fair price, not a tax.

Hi!
I just saw a documentary about Climate change, one of the many I've watched during the last two years. I feel hopelessly overwhelmed and depressed by that in 50 years, our climate could change so drastically that our beautiful Earth would be destroyed and include millions of climate refugees.

Some people say that GW doesn't exist, but what if? In European countries, steps are actually being taken to prevent it, but what about countries like USA & China, two major contributors to Global warming? Few measures that I know of are taken there to prevent it. So the steps taken in European countries won't really matter in the end anyway, right?

So what can we actually do to prevent CC? It just feels useless to try and prevent it when it seems to make so little difference. I feel so useless, being unable to do ANYTHING to prevent it. Does anyone have a different opinion/ ideas on how to help? I really want to help, but it feels impossible.

Grateful for any answers!
Best wishes, Sophie

It is well known that planes account for 5% of total world CO2 omissions and contribute to total greenhouse gases and global warming.

Up until now, the problem has been growing because more and more people are buying plane tickets.

Is not the answser to stop buying plane tickets - and to use airmiles instead?

I've heard some people say it is likely it was just very warm in Europe since accurate documentation does not exist for the rest of the planet at that time. Is this true?

Do we even know it ever actually existed?

I posted a series of questions on the weekend with the general aim of better understanding some issues about global warming that I was struggling with.

I am no stranger to science though biology and not climatology is what I would normally study.

I'm amazed by the snide answers I received as if it was treasonous to ever form a question about global warming (especailly since I was not taking sides nor do I have a side now). Why is it a faux pas to ask questions about this issue, especially ones we may not have a good answer to? Science is supposed to be passionless. If you have a conlcusion you must defend it with logical argument not with attitude. There is nothing wrong with being a skeptic about many of the claims the IPCC makes. In fact it is healthy that some people are. Ever hear of the concept of Her Majesty's Loyal Opposition?

So why the apprehension here, which I've mostly got from one side of the issue? Why the taboo on questioning I've encountered?
