Recycling bins, Reusable plastic bags in supermarkets that earn you points, wall-to-wall advertising everywhere you look on how we're destroying our planet because we dare to leave the TV on standby and about a month ago I was on this station in Liverpool - take a look at these two links:- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liverpool_South_Parkway_railway_station & http://www.merseyrail.org/stations/?iStationId=28
From the first link you'll see it cost double what it was supposed to from £16M to £32m, apparently because they've never heard of flooding; but my real interest and the relevance to this question is in the second link. You'll notice the universal icon - the wheelchair sign, for someone whose disabled - but you'll also notice the text next to this icon i.e. "Limited Only" - well I can tell you from personal bitter experience they most certainly are LIMITED!!!

This brand spanking new station with its bright and breezy staff in their crisp new blue uniforms will inform you that -

- the only toilets available on their station are these disabled toilets which are I expect state-of-the-art, being as they are self cleaning and actually talk to you. The problem is, being as they ARE the only ones available one in the main ticket hall and one leading to all the platforms - as far as I could see, doesn't that present a problem of logistics? Presumably if a disabled person or perish the thought, a whole batallion of disabled people came thundering into the main ticket hall, everyone else would have to find another public convenience or crap all over this station's nice sparkly polished floor or platform concourses! Not only that, you have to go to the ticket office and ask for token (don't worry it's free, but that'll probably change), presumably while crossing your legs at the end of a long queue (sorry 'line' for the benefit of Kindergarten Continent readers) during rush hour!

However, the worst part, is when you come to actually USE one of these ill-conceived -

- monstrosities, which I expect accounted for a good part of the £32m. First you have to get the door shut once you're in them and that is no mean feat, all the while it's talking to you about how it cleans itself etc., etc., & then you see the sign - and hear it explain to you that you have a MAXIMUM OF 15 MINUTES in it! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

You've had a chicken vinderloo the night before, with a special mixed currey & plenty of lager - but no - worse is to come!! You've used the toilet & naturally enough you need to use some toilet paper & you then discover you have to PRESS A BUTTON no less to receive some. I say some, because then to your horror, this damn fool stupid environmentally friendly, self-cleaning, contraption then issues you with ONE, yes you read correctly, ONE piece of toilet paper everytime you press the button - you look back at the sign MAXIMUM TIME 15 MINUTES - YOU DO THE MATHS & come to the extremely uncomfortable conclusion that you won't have enough time -

2007-08-13 23:56:19 · update #2

- to get enough toilet paper from this stupid machine to do what is absolutely necessary before the damn door flies open & some old biddy in a wheelchair comes flying in ready to let rip with her Chicken Tikka Masala sloshed down with several helpings of red wine - never mind the fact you'll probably miss your damn train as I did in the process!!

I ask you people - when is this madness going to stop - aren't we in the grips of global warming worldwide paranoia?!!!!!

How long will it be before we have to squat down on a recycled prayer mats in our recycled clothes - sweating from cycling to pray at altars set in front of hallowed windfarms?

Now we have a bunch of idiots camping outside Heathrow Airport in the name of so called 'Climate Change' - I personally am glad the Police may prosecute this human dross under our anti-terror laws and I'm no lover of the police I can tell you - I suppose when they want to go on holiday and/or if they ever grow up, they will cycle all the way to the Costa Del Sol - yeah right and pigs might fly! - Probably when the wife/husband or should I say 'partner' as the modern generation are afraid of marriage arent' they are screaming they want a holiday for themselves and the kids these do-gooders will soon get on a jet like everybody else - like that washes up on the banks of a river - drifting rubbish - unfortunately it's human - what a terrible waste of procreation!

Good to know that there are still REAL men in England. I was starting to think that all the ones who weren't killed in the war had been feminized.. . . .

I agree with Trevor-take your own toilet paper. This should be a habit anyway-I've experienced public tp and I much prefer the type I use anyway. About the bathroom limit-I'll sound judgmental here but shouldn't you save your 'trips' of over fifteen minutes to when you're NOT in public.
You think climate change/air pollution is not a problem? Look into the Olympics in Beijing. The Australians are even warning their athletes about not going until the very last minute b/c of the air quality.
Really, think about it. This Global Warming issue can not be just a 'liberal left' phenomena developed by the press. Scientists over the WORLD are concerned. And they work in groups so their research is very thorough. I've seen some label themselves as Conservative but still believe in GW and recycle, drive less, use less energy at home, spend money on more energy efficient appliances, etc.
Sorry you had a bad experience but it sounds like you set yourself up.

Hey brother, it's sad to hear about your train station experience.
You know, in the U.S, we've got these lexus liberals that always harp on about saving the environment and buying a prius, yet they ride around in some pimped out luxury car that, on a good day, gets like 9 mpg!!! It's stupid! They tell us to use energy saving everything, yet they sleep tight in a MANSION that eats electricity like a crack addict with money! Now, having said that, i am all for recycling cans (heck, i get cash back =P) and energy efficiency stuff, but not to the point where i go nuts about it and make my house out of cardboard shreddings and cat hair, above my tin foil windmill used to heat my eco-vegan pseudo chicken till it's slightly warm! If i want to drive the car i want without fear of pious prius eco snobs trashing it, then by god i will!!!
Great question, by the way!

It's unfortunate because people in the UK are good people.

UK has become the poodle who sips the drink before America does. It has become the poison tester.

Now I call on Americans to watch the results of Global warming legislation on these fine people. Wait at least two years before we do anything. Just wait and observe the rest of the world and the results of Kyoto and G8.

My only hope is that eventually large groups of your citizenry eventually protest if life gets impossible in the old UK and demand that the government repeal the legislative acts that are slowly imprisoning your country.

It is sad that the environment is being used for political purposes by the left. I really think that there is a silent majority out there that is getting pretty fed up with the nonsense but the left has effectively used the media and language to try and tar and feather those that don't swallow their Kool Aid and they get labeled as deniers or people that don't want clean air and water.

I'm sorry about your idiots at Heathrow. That's how good things get a bad name. We have the so-called bioterrorists over here. They belong in jail in my opinion. Unfortunately all of our human acting out isn't going to affect the problems we share-- that will take work. But you have my sympathies. Sounds like the politicians are buying votes again. That's no better in the USA, I regret.
