I don't like pop music but I was wondering what makes something pop. I know that pop means popular but what makes someone like Britney Spears or Debbie Gibson pop? Should rap (I don't like rap) be pop if it's popular?

In other words, someone that you went to see, expecting them to be really bad, but you ended up loving them (or, expected to love, and were disappointed).

I saw the Go-Go's in 1994 in San Diego, at one of those Christmas pacakge shows put on by a local station there. I expected their show to be a laugher. The tore the place up, and the crowd loved them. I even bought their greatest hits CD the next day.

I just heard CCR's "Who'll Stop the Rain?" on the raido, and I happened to think that that particular line in the chorus sounded similar to Duran Duran's "Hold Back the Rain," that line in that song's chorus. The lines are similar lyrically, and I kind of thought they sounded similar musically as well. Has anyone else noticed that?

I am indescribably infuriated by the success of songs like this. I want to get behind the mind of the people who love it so much. It is such a simple, nature made coincidence, that is prone to lead to analogy that could be produced by anyone. Is it just like a thing where people follow eachother like a fad or what? The music and the vocals are mediocre. Maybe it is because people grew up when the song was popular and it reminds them of the hype. Because I am thinking of going into the music business, and yes answer this too more importantly, do I have to write cliche songs for success, because it seems to me that the artist are purely into what they do for the sake of art get no where. And I don't know if I can write music for the masses. I don't even know why poison is considered rock, look at bret michaels he soo looks like he just got back from a rodeo! What is up with that, poison should be like country rock, I think the only thing that is rock is like Alice Cooper all else is sub.

Rock amazingly rules because it is the most meaningful out of ALL music genre's. It speaks to us about exactly what we want to hear such as depression, bullying, love, pointless things that still sound good, and a bunch of other different topics. Some amazing rock bands are KoRn, Black sabbath, kiss, alice in chains, nirvana, metallica, and system of a down. Rock is also the best type of music most bands have the amazing talents of knowing how to play their instruments the best and singing extremely well. Before I end this topic let me just point a few things out to some people who have said some stuff.
1. Rock and country are two different things. So for those who say rock and country are the same thing you are 100% wrong go listen to red neck woman and some black sabbath and you will notice they are so different.
2. No I dont really like rap mostly because of their lyrics. And No Im not white or racist because I dont like it. (Im spanish).
3. If you disagree tell me in a nice way.

I wanna do a survey about you favorite rock bands. What's your age (you don't have to answer that if you don't want to)? What's your favorite rock band? Your favorite song by them and your favorite member of the band. My favorite band of all time is the Beatles. I think they're the best ever. My favorite song by them is Michelle and my favorite memeber is Paul McCartney.

Christopher Cross had the big hit 'Ride Like The Wind', and 'Doobie
Brother' Michael McDonald sang background vocals on that hit.
I still get a kick out of this hilarious spoof from SCTV. Rick Moranis
plays Michael McDonald (and Jerry Todd):
