when I came into the movie theater, it was the scene with the guy with the chains, attached to his body. Did I miss anything before that?

I am looking for a film which i think was shown on channel 4 (uk) in the early eighties, it was a 1930's film about a couple who have a portrait of their house on the living room wall, they notice one day a ghostly dark figure (in a monks black habit) has appeared in the portrait and as the days progress, it is seen moving towards the house...
On the last day the figure is on the doorstep in the portrait, and they hear loud knocking at their own front door......
PLEASE Help! i have been searching everywhere to try and get this film.. many thanks to all who do!

Im looking for the song that Rat is playing on the radio when he takes out the girl he likes (for got her name) for the first time. For advice, Damone tells him to play it. I even watched the alternate ending hoping it would cheer me up but it was pretty much the same word for word except they had dates with them. I thought this was a good movie and i was so sure that love would prevail in the end, it was so depressing to me that she decided in the end she didnt want him.
