Use Windows Movie Maker software from Microsoft. It comes with XP. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/moviemaker/default.mspx

You can also try Ulead Movie Maker Pro 8. (30 day trial)
http://www.ulead.com/msp/runme.htm

I used Ulead as it is very versatile. If you intend on doing this many times, you might want to spend the money on it.

BUT TRY IT OUT FOR FREE FIRST.
I used a Dell computer with only 512mb Ram and found that I would never, ever do another project without having at least 1 GB Ram. The computer has to compile the clip which makes the editing process really slow and less accurate.

IF YOU HAVE ACCESS TO AN APPLE, USE an APPLE.
I don't know the software for the Apple but I know of one guy who is a commericial editor who uses an Apple laptop to edit on.
They've been in this game alot longer than PC compatibles.

Make sure you have tons of RAM. At least 1GB.

Go to http://www.archive.org/details/Countdow1960
and you can add realistic film leaders by downloading old clips and cutting off and pasting their leaders into your film.

I also found that interspersing old films into my new video was a good way to keep viewer interest. Imagine watching your family thanksgiving and then seeing a shot of some pilgrims coming across some indians.

I also got a 20th Century Fox intro here but found that I had to get
an mpg of the music to go over it. (used limewire for audio search)

There's also a great user contributed site on the internet to get
sound effects. http://freesound.iua.upf.edu/
You have to sign up but IT IS FREE!! I got an excellent sound of tea being poured from some guy in the Netherlands.

They come in real handy. I took a clip from www.archive.org of some engineering explosions and then cut in some explosion sounds.

When creating titles, you basically need a graphics program like
Photoshop where you can create the words on a transparent background. Then you just put it into your video editing program and from there decide how long you want the title up for, whether it fades in and out, what type of fade, etc.

you can use Windows Movie Maker. you download the movie you made from your camera to your computer. Then you open the file in Windows Movie Maker. Next, you click "Import Video" and you open up the file you downloaded ur movie to. Then once you get the little clips of each scene, drag them in the order you want them to be to the little boxes at the bottom of the screen. Then click "add titles or credits" you pick the type you want (beginning of the movie, after a certain clip, etc.) next a little box where you type the credits in comes up. Choose the font and background you want, and then pick the title animation you want(the style of credits) and enjoy your movie!!!
