Which is the accepted usage?

I've heard both. Someone I know says "bad rep" as in "bad reputation," but I'm not sure how the expression is really used. If it is "a bad rap," what does the word "rap" mean in this usage?

*I use ****** so that this doesn't get taken off, and hopefully it doesn't.

Personally I think with text messaging a lot of kids are going to have poor spelling when they grow up. I find it a bit irritating when people answer questions on this site using shortened words.
