they stick with ruitine, dont step out of line, always folow the rules and are generally boring. Bad connotations with this phrase

To me a square still means what it always has: a 'square peg in a round hole'. Those who don't understand person, for their individuality and uniqueness, will continue to use insulting language to judge and feel superior.

Seems not much has changed over the years.
square......A person who is regarded as dull, rigidly conventional, and out of touch with current trends.
