it means mistakes or misspellings within the quote are original to the source - so you know they aren't just a typo on the part of the quoter.

That means that the one quoting the text knows that the word immediately preceding the [sic] is misspelled or otherwise incorrect.

It's Latin-means "It is written"-the Writer is quoting someone else's statement,with any uncorrected errors preserved as in the original,usually to draw attention to these mistakes.
