If diagonal is pronounced di-A-gon-al (note the stress on the "a"), wouldn't hexagonal be pronounced hex-A-gon-al? And octagonal oct-A-gonal?

Some of my friends have recently suggested that it's pronounced like hexagon, but with an extra "al": hex-a-GON-al (stress on the "gon").

Sounds terrible to me. =) Do you agree? Do you have a site that indicates the proper pronunciation?

whenever he see's a sentence of words like on a sign or poster, label, books ect...he can naturally add up the amount of letters in that sentence in 2 seconds...i mean a sentence which has alot of words....like yesterday he added the words "THE AUSTRALIAN WOMENS WEEKLY COOKBOOK" in less than 2 seconds...he adds it in a flash...he feels its a problem,we tested him yesterday and the little bugger gets it right all the time...he added "swimming pool and spa association of victoria" in 2 seconds too...what does this mean when someone has this habit and can add it all up so quick?

Some on e explained to me that the above was abrieviated to provide a popular expletive and come from the British campaigns in India and related to a charge against soldiers for fraternising with the locals.
Is this true or do you have another explanation?

I think it is hilarious when people say words incorrectly.

Orientate.
Hopefully.
Conversate.

I just read a question here that says "configurate."

It's not a slam, it's just funny...but it has way of making you sound like you don't know what you are talking about.

Do you have any words/phrases that bother you or tickle you when misused, or mis-suffixed? Does it matter to you?

Here is my grand boo-boo.

I was at an open forum discussion when the Gulf War broke out. I was in college at the time, and trying to be all smart about it. I had a question and raised my hand...and I don't remember exactly what I asked but I used the word...

...Iraqians....

in front of about 200 people. I KNOW that this isn't right. It just kind of fell out of my mouth. I stopped talking immediately and sat down humiliated.
