There is a house in New Orleans They call the Rising Sun And it's been the ruin of many a poor boy And God I know I'm one My mother was a tailor She sewed my new bluejeans My father was a gamblin' man Down in New Orleans Now the only thing a gambler needs Is a suitcase and trunk And the only time he's satisfied Is when he's on a drunk ------ organ solo ------ Oh mother tell your children Not to do what I have done Spend your lives in sin and misery In the House of the Rising Sun Well, I got one foot on the platform The other foot on the train I'm goin' back to New Orleans To wear that ball and chain Well, there is a house in New Orleans They call the Rising Sun And it's been the ruin of many a poor boy And God I know I'm one that's the words to the song,it's all I could find on "house of the rising sun".

The term comes from an old folk song, in which "the phrase 'House of the Rising Sun' is a euphemism for a brothel" in New Orleans; that is, a house of prostitution.
The song was recorded as early as 1934, but it became much better know when a 1964 recording, by the Animals, became a pop hit.
