It's a metaphor, but I'm not sure what it means. I saw it in the following:

"Republicans raised the shade of George McGovern, the anti-Vietnam war candidate thrashed by Nixon in 1972. Once again, they said, the Democrats had turned into a party of left-wing pacifists who could no more be trusted to fight the terrorists than to 'see the job through' in Iraq."

There was once a day Buffalo was small,
Smaller than today, some can recall,
The air the same, the sun was as is now,
The workers on the courthouse, Had sweat on their brow,
The horses did trot, the wagons were fast,
At now some regret, The things of the past,
The schoolhouse still sits, In this town today,
We live in town, where history does stay,
The hotel in now, the top of O'Bannon Bank,
To us the old memories, Of Buffalo does thank,
For we still do grow, and go many ways,
Just like back then, In Buffalo's Dwindling days.

it seems to me like every question on here seems to have some form of in-proper english in it...i may use it too, don't get me wrong but what the hell does "dat" mean? slang is ok, but just looks like hell when you read it....why do we americans tend to ruin a great language with weird slang and ebonics?

Is it texted? That just looks and sounds wrong.

"I will send him a text"
"I have sent him a text"

"I will text him"
"I have text him"
"I have texted him"

It's just a horrible, horrible word. Why was it made in to a verb?

I just think that, for example, a person who turned up on a 'reality' TV show being called a celebrity sort of nullifies the word. It comes from 'Celebrate' right? Why would anyone celebrate the fact that someone else, usually boring and narcasistic, has appeared on a tv show without any intelectual merit whatsoever?

Is there any logic why we interchange one with another?
Or is '&' just a short form of 'and'? If it is then how come we dont have keys on our keyboards for other short forms like 'i.e.' for 'that is' or 'no.' for 'number' and so on.

If someone is a teacher or has a degree in English, that would be sweet. We've diagrammed this sentence intensively, but there is still some dispute, and it is causing much wailing and gnashing of teeth. Thanks for your help!
