Are there any kinds of laws or regulations which govern home-schooling? I have a friend whose ex-wife is trying to get him to pay child support after the child's 18th birthday by claiming the child is still in school. Home school. This a total crock of crap. I'm sure there are many parents home-schooling their children and doing a responsible job of it. However, I have seen many other situations where deadbeat parents (usually they're on drugs...) claim to be home-schooling their kids so they'll have an excuse for the child's truancy and their own inability to get their kids to school regularly. I think this is a form of child abuse. It's morons "home schooling" more morons and it's wrong. Does anyone know if my friend might have to pay child support past the kid's 18th birthday for this totally bogus reason?

Home school families only please.

Many times I read answers that sound pretty defensive instead of just factual, and "real".
I came on this forum with the intention of exchanging information, discuss home schooling issues, and maybe help answer some questions for a family who is just starting their home school journey.
Is it so hard to admit that at times home schooling is difficult, exhausting, and that on occasion we doubt ourselves too?
Trust me we would not have it any other way, and neither would our children; so please explain to me; without getting defensive, why some of the questions/statements push the "let me tell you" button, knowing full well know that that is their goal?.
Yes, unfortunately I too have fallen into that trap myself several times.
So does it really matter what others believe, and if so why?

Recently, I answered a homeschooling question indicating that I thought it had problems. I received 11 negative responses and not one positive one. Don't you think that, in most (but not all) cases, a child is far better off by going to a regular school for the following reasons?

1. Teaching is a difficult skill that takes years to learn. Who's to say that the homeschool teacher (usually mom) knows what she's doing?

2. Isn't it vitally important in a child's development to learn how to socialize with other children? I believe that alot of kids who are home schooled are isolated by their parents, usualy for the reason that they don't want their kid exposed to certain ideas (ie evolution).

3. Doesn't a school setting protect the child by having another set of eyes on them? How many times do you read that a teacher was the one who alerted authorities to abuse?

4. Isn't it important to know how a child is performing as compared to others?

Hi there!
Im seventeen and have been homeschooled all my life. Last year I didnt finish my senior year completly and Ive been finding it hard to be recognized the same as others who go to a regular high school. So I was wondering is it possible if I could re-take my senior year at a local high school?

I have been considering homeschooling my 8 year old. The things I am worried about are behavioral problems later in life because she's not experiencing life. She goes to school with kids all the way up to the 8th grade and she see's and hears things that no child at that age should. Were you successful in homeschooling and did you stick with it through out or did you stop and put them back in school? Basically I need pro's and con's. :)
Thanks

I missed 2 months of school last year. When we went doing anything important which was always id ask for my school work and just go to a different room. Ok, so im going into 8th grade im a strait A student and I want to be home schooled. Im not worried about missing out on a social life I hate the rude, immature, germy, jerks at my school. I have never been to a dance I think they will have a bad influence on me. And in public school they just waist my time!!!! I do have a volunteer life outside of school though. My mom is not totally opposed to it however she is not a teacher. But she wants to know how much she would need to do. Can she just give me the book and I teach myself and she corrects???? How much does it cost???? Who do we contact???? Will I have to take a fine are or gym class outside of school???? Can you skip grades???? How much time will it take up???? Is it a turn of for univercitys???? HELP!!!!

Please understand this is not a question about judging parents who choose to do this for whatever reason. I'm just curious. I am considering having my children home schooled however, when they grow up, what do the parents do? It appears to be 24/7 you and your children, but at some point they go to college or go out on their own. What then? How are the relationships with their spouses?

I would like to know more about the commitment and rigor that needs to be in place to home school kids. we have 2 kids that will be home schooled starting in 5th grade (one more year).
for instance:
1. what kind of monitoring do you need to do - does the parent sit next to the child all day? ever leave them unattended doing work?
2. i am afraid my wife will never have 'time alone' and go crazy after the first few months... anyone else have this issue?
3. my wife can't say no to the kids - what kind of precursor 'training' or plan needs to be put together before doing the home school thing...
4. or am i just worried?

From my experience, people tend to think that homeschoolers are not smart, and are social outcasts. However, this is not true. For example, I was homeschooled from birth through kindergarten. I had been reading since age 3 and was very interested in learning. Through homeschool my parents were able to keep up and teach me more than I could learn by going to school. But by the time I finished kindergarten, I decided that I wanted to go to school. When I took a test for the 1st grade they found that I already knew everything that would be taught and they sent me to 2nd grade. Second of all, being a social outcast does not happen if you approach it the right way. As long as you are involved with extracurricular activities, it's almost impossible to make friends. My homeschooled friends have many friends, sometimes more than me, and I attend a private school (I'm going into 8th grade) Also, homeschoolers are very accepting of others. It's quite hard NOT to have friends. What do you think?

My husband and I will be homescooling our children. We have done all the research and decided it was best for our family. Our oldest just turned 3 in April and we want to start having a little more structure to prepare her for later years. We already attend playgroups and have a set time for going to the local park to play. But when it comes to doing stuff, I have a few ideas, but don't tend to put them through. Basically, since I am just beginning I need some type of website to tell me when where and how, so I can can a good idea of how this whole thing will work and my children actually learn. Yes, I am a procrastinator and have days of being lazy, but this is why I am starting to look for guidance now while my children are young so that my days and their curriculumm can be more organized and worthwhile by the time full blown teaching is awaiting them! Thank you!

Sure, they may win the National Spelling Bee, but they have few social skills. Of course, this doesn't apply to every situation, but I'm betting it holds true more often than not.

What do you think? Is the "better" education these kids receive at home worth not learning vital social and interpersonal skills?

I appreciate your thoughts on the subject.

I was reading this article this morning http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/23062007/3/canada-tiny-outport-school-really-forever.html and couldn't help laugh at all the people who believe homeschooling should be outlawed for various reasons--they don't get different teachers, they don't get the same variety of kids to work with, they're not with loads of same-age peers every day, they [supposedly] don't get to play sports, etc. And here's this school where these two kids have been together for years with the same teacher, in a town that has very little to offer, I imagine, in terms of activities and certainly no sports. I have to wonder: do anti-homeschoolers believe that such places shouldn't exist, too? That it was wrong for the parents to stay there in a setting that was even more limited than what most homeschoolers have?

What do you think about it?

Are unschoolers bothered when people say "We unschool and use XXX's grammar and literature and XXX's history"? I see that often in answers and just wondered. To those answering with that type answer, do you just use that if your child wants to learn about grammar or history?
Note: We are relaxed eclectic but I am not opposed to unschooling. I am confused by the term when it is used with curriculum terms.

This is for a research paper. I need the opinions of people who were homeschooled for three or more years. Did you like being homeschooled? What was it like compared to public education? What were the pros and cons, the positive and negative aspects? Any feedback will help, thanks.

Do you think home schooling is a good idea? What are the pros and cons? If you were homeschooled, would you homeschool your own children? What about socialization? Are homeschooled children able to handle real-world problems? Are they too sheltered?

I want to know what type of school year you choose, year round or traditional 180 days and what type of curriculum you use. What are the pros and cons of a year round school year. What are the pros and cons of a 180 days with 2 month summer break school year? Thank you in advance.

I am a homeschooling parent, the pros and cons of "homeschooling" is not what I am asking for here. Thanks!!
